El Mogote

El Mogote is the easiest of the three dives we do around Isla del Fraile, with a shallow depth range (between 12 and 20 metres) that, combined with the lack of currents, makes it a very straightforward dive, suitable for beginner divers.

The geomorphology of this part of the island is defined by “El Mogote” itself, a large rock boulder rising out of the water, where the dive begins and which gives it its name. Due to its eastward orientation, this dive is mostly done in westerly wind conditions. The seabed is made up of rockfalls and large boulders, where you'll find encrusting algae communities on the platforms and upper parts of the rocks, and shade-loving communities in the small semi-dark cavities formed between two rocks.

The associated fauna is rich in sponges, cnidarians, polychaete worms, sea urchins and a wide variety of fish such as scorpionfish, moray eels, blennies, salema, two-banded bream, painted combers and damselfish, very similar to what's found at La Cresta or Pared Sur (La Boya). Depending on the season you might find groupers, common dentex, barracudas and even different types of rays. Sometimes we manage to spot seahorses and dolphins, both at the surface and swimming at 20 metres deep.
